New Year's Resolution? New Year's Goal?

December 28, 2017

Every year I try to make a resolution for the new year but like many, I fail. So, this year I am doing something different! This year, I am setting attainable goals for myself to achieve. And why a goal and not a resolution you ask?

Resolution: A decision or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something.

Goal: The result or achievement toward which effort is directed.

Even though the definitions sound the same, mentally, I am more inclined to want to achieve a goal because it’s not as restrictive and less intimidating than a resolution. Making a resolution, to me, sounds so final. If I set a goal to exercise 30 minutes a day I am more likely to achieve that and feel good about myself, than I am if I resolve to lose 15 pounds.

If I don’t lose 15 pounds then I’ve failed and my New Year’s resolution goes out the window, again. Even if I don’t exercise for 30 minutes every day, but I do some form of exercise I will feel like I’ve reached my daily goal!

Whether you want to improve your finances, become healthier, or make a lifestyle change, transform your resolutions into goals; SMART goals, to be exact!

SMART goals stand for:

S -  specific

M - measurable

A -  action oriented

R -  realistic

T -  time-based

Goals that are attainable and “smart” are easier to achieve than those that aren’t. Also, writing down your goals, posting them on your fridge or someplace where you see them every day can make an incredible difference in meeting your goals.

So, try something new for 2018 and set your goals you know you can achieve!
